Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to common questions about Shoe Miles.

How does Shoe Miles track my shoe mileage?

Shoe Miles reads workout data from Apple HealthKit. When you complete a run, walk, or hike that's recorded by your Apple Watch, iPhone, or third-party apps (Garmin, Strava, Stryd, etc.), the distance is automatically added to the shoe you've assigned to that workout.

Do I need an Apple Watch?

No. Shoe Miles works with any workout data in HealthKit, whether it comes from Apple Watch, iPhone motion sensors, or third-party fitness apps that write to HealthKit.

How do I connect HealthKit?

When you first open Shoe Miles, the onboarding flow will ask you to grant HealthKit access. You can also connect later from Settings. If you previously denied access, go to Settings › Privacy & Security › Health › Shoe Miles to re-enable it.

Why are some workouts showing 0.00 miles?

Some third-party apps (like Stryd) store distance data differently in HealthKit. Make sure the source app has full HealthKit write permissions enabled. Go to Settings › Privacy & Security › Health › [App Name] and ensure all data types are enabled, especially "Walking + Running Distance."

When should I replace my running shoes?

Most running shoes should be replaced between 300 and 500 miles. The exact number depends on your shoe type, body weight, running surface, and gait. Shoe Miles lets you set custom thresholds per shoe and warns you when you're approaching them.

Can I track shoes for multiple sports?

Yes. Shoe Miles tracks running, walking, and hiking (trail running shoes count as running). Each activity has a rotation of one or more pairs, or you can choose “Ask Me Each Time” or “Don’t Track.”

Is my data private?

Yes. All data stays on your device and in your private iCloud container. Shoe Miles has no servers, no analytics, no accounts, and no third-party SDKs. See the privacy policy for details.

How do I delete a shoe?

Open the shoe, scroll to the bottom and tap Delete Shoe. Its runs stay in Shoe Miles, unassigned, so you can move them to another pair. Deleting a shoe can’t be undone — to keep a worn-out pair’s history, retire it instead.

What happens when I retire a shoe?

Retired shoes are moved to your archive. When you retire a pair, you pick the date you last wore it, and you can view its full history at any time. Retired shoes no longer appear in your active rotation but their data is preserved.

How do I change how a shoe’s card looks?

Open the shoe and tap the paintbrush. Pick its color, a background (your color, its photo, or none), an optional faded background icon, and an icon — or no icon. You can also choose whether the nickname, size, price and colorway colors show; colorway colors appear as a stripe along the bottom of the card. To add or change the photo, tap the card at the top of the screen.

What are Smart Suggestions?

When more than one pair in your rotation could have been worn for a run, Shoe Miles suggests a shoe and marks the run “Suggested.” The miles count right away, and you confirm or change the shoe. Suggestions learn only from your own confirmed choices — things like distance, pace, time of day, indoor or outdoor, elevation, and your “Used for” tags — and run entirely on your iPhone. Expect a few wrong guesses at first, especially right after you add a pair, and better ones with every run you confirm or change. If you only have one pair, runs go straight to it. To turn suggestions off, go to Settings › New Workouts Go To.

Can I rotate between more than one pair?

Yes. Each activity has a rotation — the pairs you’re wearing for it right now. With one pair, every run goes to it. With several, Smart Suggestions picks one for you to confirm. Pairs outside a rotation, like a spare you’re saving, never get runs on their own. Set rotations in Settings › New Workouts Go To, or with “Rotation” on a shoe. When you add a pair, Shoe Miles asks whether to wear it alongside your others, replace them, or save it for later.

I forgot to add a pair. Can I move a lot of runs at once?

Yes. Open the shoe and tap Move Runs Here. Pick a start date (and an end date if you like), which activities, and one or more pairs. You’ll see how many runs and miles will move before anything changes, and you can undo it right after.

How do I remove a brand or model I added?

Go to Settings › Your Brands & Models and remove the ones you no longer want. Brands and models you add sync across your devices through your private iCloud.

How much does Shoe Miles cost?

The download is free, and every feature is free for 14 days once you start the trial. After that, a one-time purchase unlocks the app for good — no subscription. The price is shown in the app in your local currency. Family Sharing is supported, so one purchase covers your family group.

What happens when the trial ends?

Nothing is deleted. Your shoes, runs, mileage and history stay visible, and you can still save a backup. Adding or editing shoes, importing new runs, assigning runs and card looks pause until you unlock. New runs wait in Apple Health and come in once you do.

I already paid. How do I get it back on a new iPhone?

Open Settings in the app and tap Restore Purchases, signed in with the same Apple Account you bought it with. The same works if you’re in the Family Sharing group of the person who bought it.

How do I delete all my data?

In the app, go to Settings › Start Over › Delete All Data & Start Fresh (requires Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode). It deletes your shoes, runs and notes from your iPhone and your iCloud, resets every setting, and takes you back to the welcome screen — you can save a backup first. Deleting the app alone removes the copy on your iPhone but keeps your iCloud copy, so a reinstall offers to restore it. Your workouts in Apple Health are never touched.
