Brew Scripts is an open-source project by CodeCraftedApps. CodeCraftedApps ("CodeCraftedApps," "we," or "I") is one independent developer based in the United States. This Privacy Policy explains how data is handled when you use the Brew Scripts toolkit, visit this website, or interact with the GitHub repository.

Our Privacy Commitment

Brew Scripts is designed with a privacy-first approach. As open-source command-line tools that run entirely on your local machine, our scripts are built to respect your privacy by design.

Data the Scripts Collect

Local Data Only

Brew Scripts operates entirely on your local machine. The scripts:

  • Do not transmit any data to external servers owned by us
  • Do not collect analytics, telemetry, or usage statistics
  • Do not phone home or check for updates to themselves (the auto-update scripts update your Homebrew packages, not the scripts)
  • Do not require account creation or authentication with our services

Log Files

The scripts create log files stored locally on your machine (typically in ~/Library/Logs/). These logs contain:

  • Timestamps of script execution
  • Names of packages installed or updated
  • Success or failure status of operations
  • System information (macOS version, architecture)

These log files remain on your device and are never transmitted to us. You may delete them at any time.

Configuration Files

Settings you provide stay on your Mac. The config file (config/homebrew-scripts.conf) holds the app list for brew-setup.sh. The email address, phone number and Wi-Fi network name used for update notifications are written into the auto-update scripts themselves (auto-update-brew.sh, auto-update-brew-hybrid.sh). None of this is ever sent to us.

Network Connections the Scripts Make

The scripts never contact a server run by us. They do make these connections, each of which reveals your IP address to the service contacted:

  • Connectivity check: before installing, brew-setup.sh confirms you are online by sending a single curl --head request to https://www.google.com. Only the request headers are fetched; nothing about you or your Mac is sent beyond what any web request includes.
  • Homebrew installer: if Homebrew is missing, brew-setup.sh and quick-setup.sh download the official installer from raw.githubusercontent.com (GitHub).
  • Homebrew itself: installing, updating and upgrading packages contacts Homebrew's servers and GitHub, and apps installed as casks download from their vendors' sites. brew-setup.sh runs brew analytics off to turn off Homebrew's own anonymous analytics.
  • Visual Studio Code Marketplace: quick-setup.sh installs the editor extensions you list through VS Code, which downloads them from Microsoft.
  • GitHub sign-in: quick-setup.sh runs gh auth login if you are not already signed in to the GitHub CLI.
  • Notifications (optional): text summaries are sent as iMessages through the Messages app. Email reports from the hybrid script are sent with the command-line mail command through macOS's postfix and whichever SMTP relay you configure; without a configured relay, no email is sent.

Third-Party Services

The scripts interact with the following third-party services as part of their core functionality:

  • Homebrew (brew.sh): The scripts download and manage packages through Homebrew, which is subject to Homebrew's own policies
  • GitHub: Source code is hosted on GitHub. Downloading or cloning the repository is subject to GitHub's Privacy Statement
  • Apple iMessage: If you configure text notifications, the scripts send them through the Messages app, which is subject to Apple's Privacy Policy

Website Data

This Website

This website (codecraftedapps.com/brew/) is a static site hosted on GitHub Pages.

  • No analytics: this site uses no Google Analytics and no usage tracking of any kind. No analytics cookies are set.
  • No web fonts: fonts load from your device only — no Google Fonts or other third-party font CDNs
  • GitHub Pages may collect standard server logs (IP address, browser type, pages visited) as part of hosting. See GitHub's Privacy Statement for details
  • No third-party scripts or CDNs: the scripts library loads its manifest from this same site — no third-party CDN, support widget, or other external script is loaded

Open-Source Transparency

As an open-source project, all code is publicly available for review on GitHub. You can inspect exactly what the scripts do before running them. This transparency is a core part of the privacy commitment.

Children's Privacy

Brew Scripts is a developer tool and is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect any personal information from children.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page with an updated date. As this is an open-source project, significant changes will also be reflected in the repository's commit history.

Parent Organization

Brew Scripts is a project of CodeCraftedApps. For the general privacy policy covering all CodeCraftedApps projects, please see the CodeCraftedApps Privacy Policy. Where this tool-specific policy provides more detail, it takes precedence for matters related to Brew Scripts.
