Terms of Use
Hi. Thanks for using Map Path. This document is the formal “please use it responsibly and don't sue me” page. It's written to be readable instead of intimidating, but the legal weight is real, so please give it a once-over.
What this extension is
Map Path is a Safari Web Extension that rewrites map links on the pages you visit — links to Google Maps, Waze, Bing Maps, and HERE WeGo — so they open in Apple Maps instead. That is all it does.
It's a side project I built for my own use and decided to share. It's free, open source under the MIT License, and contains no advertising, analytics, telemetry, or in-app purchases.
What it does, and (importantly) what it does NOT promise
Map Path changes the destination of recognizable map links before you click them. It is a convenience, not a guarantee. In particular:
- It works on a best-effort basis. Map services change their URL formats over time, and some link shapes — unusual coordinate formats, Plus Codes, and the like — may not translate cleanly. When Map Path isn't confident, it leaves the original link untouched rather than risk sending you to the wrong place.
- It does not follow or unwrap shortened links, because doing so would require a network request and Map Path makes none. Shortened map links are left as the site provided them.
- It does not control Apple Maps. Once a rewritten link opens Apple Maps, what Apple Maps shows, routes, or does is up to Apple, not Map Path.
- It does not change websites' behavior beyond the addresses of the specific links it rewrites, and it does not redirect pages you are already viewing.
Always confirm a destination in Apple Maps before relying on it for navigation, the same as you would with any map link.
Use it responsibly
You're the one driving — literally and figuratively. Map Path does not track what you search for or where you go; there is no logging and no judgement. By using Map Path, you agree:
- To comply with all laws applicable to you. Don't rely on a rewritten map link in a way that's unsafe or unlawful.
- You are solely responsible for verifying directions and destinations before acting on them.
- You will not attempt to use Map Path to facilitate harm to other people, systems, or data.
“As-is” — no warranty
Map Path is provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including but not limited to the implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. The developer makes no guarantee that Map Path will be error-free, uninterrupted, accurate for every link, or compatible with every future version of Safari or every map service.
You install and use Map Path at your own risk. The developer is not responsible for any direct, indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or exemplary damages — including but not limited to a wrong or missed destination, lost time, lost productivity, or any other loss — arising out of or related to your use of, or inability to use, the extension. This applies even if the developer has been advised of the possibility of such damages, to the maximum extent permitted by applicable law.
If your jurisdiction does not allow the disclaimer or limitation of certain warranties or liabilities, those disclaimers and limitations apply only to the extent allowed by law in that jurisdiction.
Software license
The source code is released under the MIT License. You can read it, fork it, adapt it, and build your own version. The MIT License is the controlling legal document for the source code itself; these Terms of Use govern your use of the distributed extension (whatever version you install from the App Store or elsewhere).
Maintenance and updates
Map Path is a personal project, not a commercial product. I plan to keep it working as Safari and Apple's platforms ship new versions, and I'll do my best to address accuracy or compatibility issues as they appear, but there is no service-level commitment and no guarantee of:
- A specific response time on support emails or bug reports
- Continued updates indefinitely into the future
- Support for every map service, link format, or future Apple platform
- Restoration of any specific feature if it has to be removed for legal, security, or compatibility reasons
If at some point I have to stop maintaining Map Path, the existing versions will keep working for as long as Safari supports them, and the source code will remain publicly available so that someone else (or a future me) can pick it up.
Trademarks
“Apple Maps”, “Safari”, “Google Maps”, “Waze”, “Bing Maps”, “HERE WeGo”, and any related logos are the property of their respective owners. Map Path is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Apple, Google, Microsoft, HERE, or any other company. References to those services are descriptive — they tell you which links Map Path recognizes and where it sends them — and should not be read as a claim of affiliation.
Changes to these terms
If I have to update these terms, the updated version will live at this same URL with a new “Last updated” date at the top. If a change is material, I'll call it out in the release notes for the version that introduces it.
Indemnification
To the maximum extent permitted by law, you agree to indemnify and hold harmless CodeCraftedApps and Don Castle from any claims, damages, losses, liabilities, and expenses (including reasonable legal fees) arising out of or related to your use or misuse of Map Path, your violation of these Terms, or your violation of any law or the rights of any third party.
Governing law
These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of Nevada, United States, without regard to conflict-of-law provisions. Any disputes arising from your use of Map Path will be resolved in the courts of the State of Nevada or the federal courts located therein, to the extent permitted by law. If you are using Map Path from a jurisdiction whose laws mandate a different forum or governing law, those mandatory rules apply to the extent required.
