Getting Started

Up and running in under a minute.

Launch DevPeek once after installing — that registers its Quick Look extension with macOS. From then on there’s nothing to keep open: select a file in Finder and press the space bar to see it formatted. DevPeek works on the desktop and in the column-view preview pane too.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to common questions about DevPeek.

I installed DevPeek but nothing changed. What now?

Open the DevPeek app once after installing — that’s what registers the Quick Look extension with macOS. Then select a supported file in Finder and press space. There’s no window to keep open; the app just needs that first launch.

How do I turn the preview on or off?

Quick Look extensions are managed by macOS in System Settings → General → Login Items & Extensions → Quick Look. DevPeek appears there once you’ve launched the app, and you can toggle it whenever you like.

I already have MarkPeek. Do I need to remove it?

No. Both apps preview Markdown, and both use the same rendering engine, so whichever one macOS picks, the preview looks the same. Keep both, or remove MarkPeek if you’d rather have one app — either way works.

Why are the values in my .env file hidden?

Environment files often hold passwords and API keys, and a preview can appear on screen during a call or a screen share. DevPeek shows the keys and hides the values by default. You can change that in DevPeek’s settings.

Can I click or fold things in the preview?

No — macOS doesn’t allow interaction inside Quick Look previews. So DevPeek shows each file complete: JSON laid out to a sensible depth, tables in full. To work with the file, open it in your editor as usual.

Does the preview have a footer or watermark?

No. DevPeek shows your file and nothing else — no footer, no watermark, no branding added to the preview.

Does DevPeek change my files?

Never. DevPeek is read-only — it reads the file solely to render the preview and makes no changes to it.

How do I remove DevPeek?

Drag the DevPeek app to the Trash, just like any other app. The Quick Look extension lives inside the app, so deleting the app removes the preview feature automatically.

Does deleting the app leave anything behind?

A small amount of settings — your chosen appearance and preview options — which is how it goes for nearly every Mac app. macOS keeps a sandbox folder for each app it has run, under ~/Library/Containers/ and ~/Library/Group Containers/, and leaves it there in case you reinstall. DevPeek adds nothing beyond that: no login items, no background process, no helper tools.

To clear it as well, delete the folders containing com.doncastle.DevPeek in those two locations.

What macOS version do I need?

DevPeek requires macOS 27 or later.
