DevPeek

Developer files, readable from the space bar.

Select a script, a config file, a CSV or a Makefile in Finder and press space — DevPeek shows it formatted and coloured, right in the Quick Look panel. Markdown included.

In development — coming to the Mac App Store as a one-time purchase, for macOS 27 or later.

What makes it different

Quick Look, finished for the files developers actually open.

Files Finder leaves blank

Out of the box, macOS shows many developer files as a bare icon or a wall of plain text. DevPeek fills that gap — including files with no extension at all, like Makefile and Dockerfile.

Readable, not just visible

Syntax colouring, line numbers, JSON laid out with its structure showing, CSV as a real table. Light and dark mode follow your Mac.

Private by design

No accounts, no analytics, no tracking, no servers. The preview extension has no network access at all — your files never leave your Mac.

What it previews

Planned for version 1.0, and being tested format by format.

Code

Swift, Python, JavaScript and TypeScript, Rust, Go, shell scripts and more, with syntax colouring and line numbers.

Config files

YAML, TOML, INI and property lists — including binary plists, shown readably instead of as unreadable bytes.

JSON

Formatted and indented, with its nesting easy to follow, instead of one long line.

CSV & TSV

Shown as a table with a header row and row count, so you can see what’s in it at a glance.

Files with no extension

Makefile, Dockerfile, LICENSE, README and dotfiles — shown as clean, readable text.

Environment files

.env files show their keys with the values hidden by default, so pressing space never puts a secret on screen.

Markdown

Clean, formatted Markdown previews — the same renderer as MarkPeek, with no footer or watermark.

DevPeek and MarkPeek

Two apps, one rendering engine.

MarkPeek is free and previews Markdown. DevPeek includes Markdown too, and adds the developer formats above. Already use MarkPeek? Keep it — both apps render Markdown with the same engine, so whichever one macOS uses, the preview looks the same. There’s nothing to uninstall and no setting to change.

Built for macOS

Native, sandboxed, and lightweight.

DevPeek is a native macOS Quick Look extension built with SwiftUI. It runs in the App Sandbox, reads only the file you preview, never changes your files, and its preview extension cannot make network connections. It requires macOS 27 or later.
